The obligato part of the aria, written in alto clef, has no instrumental indication; the intention to the viola da gamba is inferred from the context of the manuscript and from some tipically viol chords.
This is a different version of the aria I,11 from the opera Briseide (see there). In the opera the aria is accompanied by a 5-part string group. Apart from the different instrumentation, this version differs in the instrumental introductions, the accompaniment in B part and other minor details.
